When Karen was 35 weeks pregnant with Gage, she was in a automobile
accident. During the accident, Karen's abdomen was pushed into the
steering wheel. Upon arrival to the Emergency
Room the doctors discovered she was in labor and ordered
an emergency c-section. During the surgery they found that her abdomen
was filled with blood and the baby's placenta was 60-70 percent torn
from her uterus. His parents were told that Gage was lucky to have survived but not to have too much hope that he would be very bright. At one point during his first few hours of life, Gage actually died because of oxygen deprivation, but with the skills of the medical staff and God's will, he survived.
In the months that followed, Gage was diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy which is the most common form and accounts for nearly 80 percent of all CP cases. Children with this type of cerebral palsy have one or more tight muscle groups with stiff, jerky movements and limited mobility. They often have a hard time moving from one position to another.
Gage has worked with Texas Children's Hospital, occupational therapists and the State of Texas' Preschool Programs for Children with Disabilities. He is now in 2nd Grade and with the help of a permanent teacher assistant, hired by his school; he is able to attend mainstream classes with his peers.
Gage has made excellent progress in both his physical and mental
abilities. His parents are EXTREMELY proud of their son and his hard
work. Gage still requires a brace on his right leg and continues to
utilize the help of his teaching assistant. However, he is
achieving A's and B's in all his classes and his greatest wish is to be
able to play baseball and run with his friends.
Gage is an avid Lamar Baseball fan. His
favorite athlete is
former Lamar and Major League Baseball player, Kevin Millar and his Uncle Will Henderson former 1st Baseman and Designated Hitter for Lamar.
In order to continue his progress, Gage is in need of a
surgical procedure not covered by his insurance along with continued
therapy. The "Lester
D. Henderson Foundation for Youth" is trying to raise $30,000 plus to assist
Gage and his family for his medical expenses.
